Temptation

The best laid plans sometimes don’t suit the foundation
She planned until her head hurt but now she’s in a conundrum of a situation
In actuality she was trying, but try she could no more
And it’s at that moment that temptation boldly knocked upon her door
“Hello” she said “I’ve been waiting quite a while for you, please come in and have a seat,
You can’t stay too long; I was just curious to see you and thought that we should meet”
How wrong she was to allow him in, temptation was a master of his art
He stared at her and she at him, and in the end he had infiltrated her heart
In time she began to fall under his spell, quite the hypnotist was temptation to her
She was slowly becoming a willing marionette and he her most skillful puppet master

One day while looking in the mirror, she almost didn’t recognize her own face
The warmth, the honesty and the good-hearted nature was gone, it had been replaced
Trading beauty in for beauty out, she could feel the coldness festering within
But no one recognized the exchange; people can be so shallow, self-indulged and dim
To be fair to those around her though, temptation had been hanging around for quite some time
She was just too proud and too complacent to pay him any serious mind
How foolish of her to think for a minute that she could handle him on her own
She rarely ever asked for help, if only she had known

She should have prayed harder, had more faith and maybe given temptation a little more respect
But lo and behold she believed she was in control until temptation proved her to be inept
Fight she should have, with all her might to keep temptation away
But she let him in, just for a visit, not realizing that his intent was to stay
So now here she stands with many like herself reaping what she sowed with a false smile
Unbeknownst to her temptation was truly ecstatic and he remained with her all the while
Maybe one day she’ll get the strength to ignore temptation when he calls
But until then, we’re left to ponder why she ever opened that door at all.
